Word for the Year

It has become my habit in place of New Year's Resolutions to choose a word for my year. The word is meant to encapsulate my hopes for the coming months. It is meant as an intention, a notification to the Universe that this is what I want more of in my life. Picking just one word for the year frees me from the hamster wheel of self improvement projects. Instead, it allows the freedom to let the year unfold in a general direction.

My word for 2016 was expansive, an intention to make room for learning and growing. Expansive can also mean open, demonstrative, or communicative. I did some work this year with nonviolent communication and concentrated on restorative dialogue.

My word for 2017 is cultivate.
1. to prepare for use, to nourish
2. to foster the growth of, to nurture
3. to improve by labor, care or study
4. to further, encourage and develop
5. to form and refine

What will I cultivate this year? I could start by planting those heirloom butter lettuce seeds that my mom sent me and which I never managed to put in the dirt. I would like to cultivate my new (...brand new...) "skills" on the piano. I would like to continue to cultivate my practice of medicine, learning everything new that I can about what is available to help my patients. Friendships. Physical fitness. Communication skills. So many things. Maybe I should also cultivate some white space in my calendar?

So. Cultivate.
