Colorful Foods that Fight Cancer

No one food can prevent cancer, but a diet rich in a variety of vegetables, including the ones listed below, has been shown to reduce the risk.

Beets. These veggies get their crimson color from compounds called betalains, which may help prevent cancer.

Winter squash. From pumpkins to butternut squash, these favorites owe their rich orange shades to carotenoids, which have been linked to a lower risk of prostate, breast, and lung cancers.

Brussels sprouts. Dubbed "the new kale," this suddenly fashionable veggie is showing up on menus everywhere. These members of the cabbage family are full of fiber, which helps cut the risk of colon cancer.

Parsnips. Related to carrots, these white root vegetables contain a lot of vitamin C--an antioxidant that helps the body repair damaged DNA and may decrease skin cancer risk.
