What is Botox®?
Botox® Cosmetic is an injectable purified protein produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacterium.
What does Botox® do?
When injected into the muscles of the face, Botox® blocks nerve impulses and weakens the muscles responsible for frowning and squinting. Over a period of several days, lines become softer and often completely disappear. Botox® typically takes 2 days to take effect, but the lines can continue to improve for up to 2 weeks. It can be injected into the muscles that cause crow's feet, horizontal forehead lines, and frown lines.
How long do the results last?
With Botox® Cosmetic, the effects on the targeted muscles will last from 3 to 4 months, at which time another treatment is required. After several treatments, however, results can last even longer.
Is this treatment safe?
Botox® Cosmetic has been used successfully for over 20 years in ophthalmology and for over 10 years in dermatology. Side effects are very rare, but you should speak with your dermatologist about any specific concerns you may have.
Are the injections painful?
Dr. Gilchrist applies a topical numbing agent prior to injections, and the procedure is virtually painless.
